Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
