The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
