Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
