At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
